Kerry to speak to teachers' union

WASHINGTON, July 8 (UPI) -- The American Federation of Teachers announced Thursday that Sen. John F. Kerry, D-Mass., would address their annual convention in Washington.

The AFT convention, the nation's second largest education labor union, is scheduled to hear from the Massachusetts Democrat and likely presidential nominee on Friday, July 16. On Tuesday, Kerry canceled a planned address to the annual meeting of the National Education Association, whose delegates had endorsed his presidential bid the day before, in order to meet with his running mate, Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C.

Convention delegates are expected to vote during the meeting on policy resolutions concerning early childhood education, reauthorization of the Higher Education Act, the economy and jobs, Iraq and democracy and the federal Patriot Act.

The AFT expects more than 3,000 delegates will attend its 2004 convention, the focus of of which it said is change in leadership in the White House and within the American Federation of Teachers.
