Teenager arrested in ranch killings

HONDO, N.M., July 7 (UPI) -- New Mexico police Wednesday arrested a 14-year-old boy in the slayings of his father, stepmother and stepsister on a ranch owned by ABC newsman Sam Donaldson.

Donaldson discovered the crime scene on the property near Hondo Tuesday when he went to the home of his ranch manager, CNN reported.

After he notified the sheriff's department, all three bodies were found in a shallow grave on the property, the report said.

Donaldson and his family were away from the ranch over the July Fourth holiday when the slayings occurred, authorities said.

The youth was arrested Wednesday afternoon and placed in a juvenile facility, said Sheriff Tom Sullivan.

Prosecutors Thursday planned to file charges of murder and of tampering with evidence against the youth.

Donaldson, who grew up on a ranch in New Mexico, owns several thousand acres of land around Hondo.
