State won't pursue voters' purge of felons

TALLAHASSEE, Fla., July 7 (UPI) -- Florida's top elections officials say they will make no attempt to legally enforce the removal of 47,000 possible convicted felons from the voter rolls.

The state sent the list to Florida's 67 county elections supervisors to verify they have lost their right to vote, but the supervisors have been hesitant to act.

Checks of the list have shown there are at least 2,000 names that are in error, The Miami Herald reported Wednesday.

"If the Legislature had wanted to put in a time frame and a deadline, it could have done so," said Dawn Roberts, director of the Florida Division of Elections.

Florida is the largest of six states that do not automatically restore the voting rights of felons after they serve their sentences. In Florida, they have to apply to have their rights restored.

Critics have said removal of the wrong names could swing the election to Republicans since most of those on the list are Democrats.
