Montreal man loses hand in machete attack

MONTREAL, July 5 (UPI) -- Montreal police are investigating a possible gang-related machete attack on a convenience store cashier who lost his hand and left ear in the attack.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Monday the 24-year-old employee from Sri Lanka was working at a convenience store Saturday when several men entered and allegedly attacked him with a machete.

Montreal police officials said robbery does not appear to a motive since the cash register was not touched. But the victim had reportedly argued with a street gang about one week before the incident.

The CBC said the unidentified victim also suffered a fractured right wrist and several head lacerations during the attack and was hospitalized in serious condition.
