Opposition party in Japan may make strides

TOKYO, July 4 (UPI) -- A survey of voters and projection analyses in Japan suggest the opposition Democratic Party of Japan might make strides in the July 11 election.

A Kyodo news survey released Sunday said main opposition Democratic Party of Japan is set to top the list of political parties in the proportional representation section, beating the ruling Liberal Democratic Party.

Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, leader of the LDP, set a moderate target of 51 seats for the July 11 House of Councilors election -- the same number the party had held until one member left.

The survey said the DPJ, led by Katsuya Okad, is set to get more seats than its 38 up for re-election.

The three-day telephone survey contacted 59,828 households with eligible voters, with 43,605 voters responding. About 40 percent said they are undecided for whom they will vote.
