South Korean official resigns in scandal

SEOUL, July 3 (UPI) -- South Korea's vice culture and tourism minister has resigned over accusations of influence peddling, the Korea Times reported Saturday.

President Roh Moo-hyun Friday accepted the resignation offered by Oh Jee-chul over suspicion he improperly used his influence to help a pro-administration media chief's wife get a professorship at a Seoul university.

"Oh's resignation was accepted as most allegations surrounding him was found true according to the midterm results of the investigations," said a presidential spokesman.

Authorities are seeking to determine whether newly-appointed Culture and Tourism Minister Chung Dong-chae was involved.
