U.K. to try soldier in Iraqi's shooting

BASRA, Iraq, July 2 (UPI) -- Britain will bring to trial a U.K. soldier charged with shooting and wounding a 13-year-old Iraqi boy, the Mirror reported Friday.

Pvt. Alexander Johnston of the 1st Battalion of the King's Own Scottish Borderers was charged with unlawful wounding in June, after the wounding of the boy last September.

No venue has been selected for the trial and no date picked for preliminary proceedings.

Johnston is the fifth U.K. soldier to be charged with a crime in Iraq, and could face a civilian prison or detainment in a military correctional institution if he is convicted.

The private also could also face the alternative charge of negligent handling of a weapon, said Britain's attorney general.

Johnston was on guard duty in al-Uzayr, south of Amarah when the shooting happened.
