Woman hospitalized in cop gun discharge

CHICAGO, June 29 (UPI) -- An elderly Chicago woman was hospitalized Tuesday after the accidental discharge of a police officer's pistol, ABC7, Chicago, reported.

The 78-year-old woman, who had been waiting for a bus, may have been grazed by broken debris or even a bullet, officials said. She was taken to Northwestern Medical Hospital for treatment.

Her condition was not immediately known.

A Chicago State University police sergeant was waiting for his boss outside the Daley Center when he reportedly adjusted his handgun, officials said. It fell to the ground, discharging one round.

"We are trying to find out exactly where the bullet went, but there was a lady that claims either the bullet or a fragment from the sidewalk ricocheted and cut into her leg," said Capt. James Knightly.
