MIAMI, June 29 (UPI) -- Government lawyers are arguing in Miami the United States has no responsibility for the plundering of gold from Hungarian Jews during World War II.
The argument was contained in documents in the Hungarian Gold Train suit filed in the United States by Hungarian Holocaust survivors and their relatives, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported Tuesday.
The papers said the United States bears neither the legal nor the moral responsibility" for Jewish valuables plundered 60 years ago by the Nazis and then by U.S. Army officers.
The issue is scheduled for mediation this summer before Washington attorney Fred Fielding, a member of he Sept. 11 terrorism commission. If no agreement can be reached, U.S. District Judge Patricia Seitz has set trial for September.
The papers filed by the Justice Department show that no compromise is imminent.
David Mermelstein of Miami, one of the survivors, said the government's contentions are "very disappointing."
