Mongolian ruling party loses elections

ULAN BATOR, Mongolia, June 29 (UPI) -- Mongolia's voters appear to have put an end to the dominance of the former Communist Party in parliament, according to Eurasia.net.

for the first time since political reforms were introduced in 1990, opponents of the former Communist Party -- now the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party -- could gain control of the Great Ikh Khural, as the country's parliament is known.

Although Prime Minister Nambaryn Enkhbayar has accused the opposition of vote rigging, preliminary results show the ruling MPRP took 36 seats, just half of the number it has held for the past four years. Election committee officials said the opposition Motherland Democratic Coalition also appears to have a similar number of seats in the 76-seat governing assembly.

Final election results will not be available until later.
