BELGRADE, Serbia, June 28 (UPI) -- The world breathed a sigh of relief Monday at the news that Serb reformist Boris Tadic had won the weekend's presidential election.
Tadic beat hardline nationalist Tomislav Nikolic, the candidate of the Serbian Radical Party, in a close race.
The United States, the European Union and neighboring Croatia all welcomed Tadic's victory, saying Serbia had turned its back on the errors of the past and could now look forward to greater integration with Europe.
A Nikolic victory risked plunging the Balkan region back into chaos. Nikolic believes in a Greater Serbia including the annexation of parts of Croatian territory.
Tadic, 45, is a university professor of psychology who wants to take Serbia into the European Union. He replaced Zoran Djindjic, who was assassinated in March last year.
