LOS ANGELES, June 25 (UPI) -- Los Angeles Police Chief Bill Bratton made the rounds of the city's newscasts Friday to repeat the rough arrest of a suspect would be investigated fully.
Bratton downplayed comparisons between Wednesday's apparent beating of an African-American alleged car thief to the notorious 1991 incident involving Rodney King, which led to the devastating riots in the city a year later.
Bratton said while the King beating involved numerous officers and went on for several minutes, the apprehension of Stanley Miller during a televised car chase boiled down to one officer striking the suspect several times and then stopping.
Police contend Miller was resisting arrest and might have been trying to make a grab for one of the officer's radios; police officers are trained not to let a suspect grab for their equipment, especially their gun.
Community leaders have insisted the officers involved be prosecuted and planned a demonstration Friday afternoon outside the 77th Street substation.
