Danforth confirmed as U.N. envoy

WASHINGTON, June 25 (UPI) -- The U.S. Senate has unanimously confirmed former GOP Sen. John C. Danforth of Missouri as the next U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

Danforth replaces John D. Negroponte, who was sworn in as the new U.S. ambassador to Iraq Wednesday, the New York Times reported.

Danforth, 67, left the Senate in 1995 after serving three terms. He is an ordained Episcopal priest who presided over the state funeral of former President Ronald Reagan at Washington's National Cathedral June 11.
