BELGRADE, Serbia, June 23 (UPI) -- Boris Tadic, the reformist candidate in this weekend's presidential elections in Serbia, has a strong lead over his ultra-nationalist rival.
A poll released Wednesday put Tadic's support at 53.6 percent compared with 46.4 percent support for Tomislav Nikolic, the candidate of the hardline nationalist Serbian Radical Party.
The poll was conducted by the Faktor Plus polling agency among a representative sample of likely voters.
The results of the poll will calm nerves among reformists in Serbia and the governments and people of the Balkans. Nikolic, whose party leader is on trial in the Netherlands for war crimes, believes in a greater Serbia and his rhetoric is similar to that of former Serbian leader Slobodan Milosevic.
Tadic's fortunes have been helped in recent days by public backing from Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica.
Tadic came in second in the first round of voting.
Analysts say Tadic will probably win in the run off against Nikolic if reformists of the center-left and center-right can put aside their differences and rally together.
