Lawyer: Saddam mistreated in U.S. custody

BAGHDAD, June 23 (UPI) -- The Jordanian lawyer hired by Saddam Hussein's family says the deposed Iraqi leader in U.S. custody has wounds on his body, Sky News reported Wednesday.

"There are fresh wounds on his body," said Muhammed al Rushadan, who cited a copy of a International Committee of the Red Cross document he received.

The identification document that indicated minor wounds was released along with a handwritten letter Saddam wrote to his family.

The letter was written on a standard form provided by the Red Cross when they last visited him in February, but much of it was stroked out in heavy black ink by U.S. censors.

In it, Saddam asks his family to "say hello to everyone," and adds, "My spirit and my morale, they are high, thanks to greatness of God."

The United States said Tuesday it would hand over legal custody of Saddam and other figures to the interim Iraqi government when it received warrants, but will retain physical custody of the men.
