Pope gives Spain's PM a serious talking to

VATICAN CITY, June 22 (UPI) -- The Vatican, fresh from failing to get the European Union to publicly proclaim its Christian roots, is complaining Spain is ignoring its Christian roots.

Specifically, Pope John Paul II is denouncing Madrid's proposed liberal sex reforms, which include legalizing same-sex marriages, relaxing abortions laws and speeding up divorces, the Telegraph reported Tuesday.

Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, Spain's new socialist prime minister, also intends to push embryonic stem cell research and freeze an education bill that favors Roman Catholic religious teaching in schools.

The pope said it was the duty of Spain to "conserve moral and cultural values, as well as its Christian roots." Afterwards, Zapatero gave no indication that he would oblige the pope.

Recently the pope also failed to convince European leaders to include references in the EU constitution to Christianity's role in European history.
