Lula's approval drops more than 5 points

SAO PAULO, June 22 (UPI) -- The approval rating of Brazil's president dropped several points from May to June, according to an opinion poll released Tuesday.

The Sensus polling agency reported approval for President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva fell from 34.5 percent in May to 29.4 percent in June.

The firm surveyed 2,000 people in 24 states, discovering also that if a vote were held today, 47.6 percent of Brazilians said they would not vote for Lula.

The president's term expires in 2006.

Lula's administration has been dogged during recent months by corruption scandals and political setbacks. Brazil's economy, however, is showing signs of recovery after a dismal 2003, although unemployment remains at s13 percent.
