MOSCOW, June 21 (UPI) -- Russia's news and economic reporting agencies, RIA Novosti and Prime-Tass, announced a merger Monday to optimize operations.
Novosti General Director Svetlana Mironyuk and Prime-Tass Director Oleg Ananiev signed the agreement in Moscow.
Mironyuk said that the agencies did not regard one another as true competitors.
"Cooperation between RIA Novosti and Prime-Tass will enable the agencies to optimize their operations in an environment of tighter competition on the news market," she said.
Ananiev said Prime-Tass's financial and economic information in Russian, English and other languages would be offered via RIA Novosti's media.
Novosti has staff writers in Russia and four dozen other countries. The agency offers social, political, economic, scientific, and finance information in Russian, Arabic and major European languages via electronic media and the Internet on a daily basis.
