Japan PM pledges to keep public informed

TOKYO, June 20 (UPI) -- Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi promised to put into writing and announce publicly any agreements on the activities of Japanese troops in Iraq.

The government "will put in order the contents of the agreement between Japan and the United States and present them (publicly)," Koizumi said, Kyodo News Service reported.

Koizumi, who heads the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, said he told President George W. Bush during their talks earlier this month that Japan will make its own decisions regarding what activities its troops will undertake.

"We will conduct activities that are appropriate for Japan" he said. "We can't do the same as the United States and Britain. Japan will make its own judgment."

Opposition parties have criticized Koizumi for failing to clarify how and what Britain and the United States have agreed in allowing Japan's Self-Defense Force not to come under the multinational force's unified command and continue conventional activities at Japan's discretion.
