Australia to commit to missile defense

MELBOURNE, June 19 (UPI) -- Australia said Saturday it will commit to the United States missile defense program next month when it signs the memorandum of understanding in America.

Defense Minister Robert Hill said under the agreement Australia will cooperate with the United States on research into missile defense for a program known as "Son of Star Wars," the Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported Saturday

Hill said one of the first projects will include investigating the potential of Australia's 'over the horizon' radar technology in missile defense.

Australia's new air warfare naval destroyers will be equipped with radars that can also detect ballistic missiles, which could provide early warning of an attack.

The Labor Party has signaled it will end or renegotiate the agreement if it wins government.
