WASHINGTON, June 18 (UPI) -- The United States urged the government of Myanmar Friday to release opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
The 1991 Nobel laureate has been struggling for democracy in Myanmar (Burma) for the last 16 years and "continues to inspire those who support democracy and freedom around the world," the U.S. State Department said.
"The United States again calls upon Myanmar's military rulers to release Aung San Suu Kyi and fellow democracy leader U Tin Oo immediately and unconditionally," the department said.
The statement also urged Myanmar authorities to reopen offices of the National League for Democracy across the country and to release all political prisoners.
June 19 is Aung San Suu Kyi's birthday. She has spent eight of her birthdays under detention.
"The United States salutes Aung San Suu Kyi on her 59th birthday. We look forward to the time when she will be able to celebrate her birthday in a free and democratic Myanmar," the State Department said.
