NEW PALTZ, N.Y., June 18 (UPI) -- Nine days after the mayor of New Paltz, N.Y., was barred from marrying gay couples, his deputy performed four same-sex weddings.

Deputy Mayor Rebecca Rotzler told The New York Post that she and Julia Walsh, a village board member, married the couples at a bed-and-breakfast in the Ulster County town Thursday night.

She described the ceremonies as "happy, cheerful, joyous, loving."

Mayor Jason West had married more than two dozen same-sex couples before being stopped by a judge.
