LANSING, Mich., June 18 (UPI) -- Michigan State University's longtime provost has been appointed to serve as the school's 20th president.
Lou Anna K. Simon has been at Michigan's largest university for most of her adult life and served as acting president.
Board President David Porteous told the Detroit Free Press Simon was a candidate in 1993 when the board named Peter McPherson to the job and this time she was the strongest one.
"As you looked around at the qualities all of us wanted, she measured up perfectly and everyone agreed," he said.
Michigan's two major state universities will be headed by women when Simon is installed on Jan. 1. Mary Sue Coleman was appointed president of the University of Michigan in 2002.
Simon came to MSU in 1974 as a teacher and director of the Office of Institutional Research.
