The students were demonstrating to press for the release of six of their colleagues, who were arrested in a dispute with the Student Support Fund, a government institution providing them with financial support.

City Mayor Uhaymar Ali Uhaymar said the authorities apprehended the policemen who opened began firing on the demonstrators. An investigation was under way.

"The incident occurred when police intervened to end riots by the demonstrating students who have destroyed university property," Uhaymar said.
