BELGRADE, Serbia, June 17 (UPI) -- Serbia's hard-line nationalist presidential candidate Tomislav Nikolic has issued a bold call for support from Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica.
Nikolic was reported by the Serbian media Thursday as saying he and Kostunica should join forces in the interests of Serbian unity.
Nikolic came top in the first round of presidential voting last weekend and faces a run off against reformist candidate Boris Tadic on June 27.
Kostunica has so far refused to endorse either candidate, a state of affairs that has surprised Western governments hoping he will endorse Tadic.
Nikolic is the candidate of the Serbian Radical Party whose leader is on trial in the Netherlands on war crimes charges.
Most analysts believe Tadic has a strong chance of winning in the second round but only if reformist forces rally behind him. Should Kostunica come out in favor of Nikolic the race would become wide open.
