DENVER, June 17 (UPI) -- A poll commissioned by a private group indicates a dead heat between Colorado Republican Senate candidates Pete Coors and Bob Schaffer.

But, the Rocky Mountain News said Thursday, the number of Republican voters still undecided represents the largest bloc of voters.

The statewide survey of 500 Republicans considered likely to vote in the Aug. 10 primary showed undecided voters at 36 percent, Schaffer at 34 percent and Coors at 31 percent -- differences erased by the 4.4 percent margin of error. The poll was conducted by the Club for Growth, a Washington, D.C.-based organization that supports low-tax, pro-economic growth candidates for federal office.

"Schaffer is in a much stronger position than we thought, given that Pete Coors has a huge name identification in the state," said David Keating, the Club for Growth's executive director. The survey was done two days after the state Republican convention, when Schaffer won top line over Coors on the primary ballot.
