Urban population in China hits 338 million

BEIJING, June 16 (UPI) -- China's urban population reached 338 million by the end of 2003, the Ministry of Construction said Wednesday in its annual report.

The country's urban area was declared to be 154,000 square miles, with urban population density pegged at 525 people per square mile.

In 2003, China's fixed assets investment in cities by both central and local governments reached $54 billion, up 42.9 percent over the previous year, the state Xinhua news agency reported.

Fixed assets investment for urban development accounted for 8.1 percent of the country's total fixed assets investment in 2003, up 0.9 percentage points over 2002.

In 2003, 5,550 miles of new roads were added to Chinese cities, the ministry said.
