Joint Chiefs general father of the year

WASHINGTON, June 16 (UPI) -- The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Richard Myers has been selected as "father of the year."

The 63rd annual award will be made Thursday by the National Father's Day Council in New York City.

The affable Myers, who once accidentally insulted his wife Mary Jo's intelligence during a news conference -- and apologized at the next one -- has three grown children and two grandchildren.

"We didn't solicit the award. It just kind of appeared," an officer on Myers staff told UPI.

Also receiving awards are NASCAR driver Richard Petty, basketball player Isaiah Thomas and musician Ellis Marsalis.

All proceeds from the luncheon will benefit prostate cancer patients.
