NY state to probe Son of Sam Web site

ALBANY, N.Y., June 15 (UPI) -- New York's governor says he will investigate a Web site featuring writings by Son of Sam killer David Berkowitz, the New York Post reported Tuesday.

Gov. George Pataki made the announcement Monday even though state prison officials said the site does not violate any laws.

"It's very upsetting to me that the Son of Sam has a Web site, and we're going to look into it," Pataki said.

Berkowitz, who was denied parole for the second time last week, sends his views on a variety of topics to a church, which posts them on a Web site.

Much of Berkowitz' posted writings are religious in nature and include statements of regret for the murders he committed.

State prisons spokesman James Flateau said there is no law that prohibits the infamous killer from sending letters outside prison walls, and then having those letters posted on the Web.

Berkowitz is serving 25 years to life for killing six people in 1977.
