U.S. Hispanic dropout rate highlighted

WASHINGTON, June 12 (UPI) -- Rep. Ruben Hinojosa, D-Texas, called Saturday for a fresh national commitment to reverse the high school dropout rate among Hispanic youth.

"The dropout rate in the Hispanic community has been the nation's highest for far too long," he said during the weekly Democratic Hispanic radio address Saturday, going on to cite numerous statistics about the financial consequences of not finishing high school.

To raise awareness of the need to reverse the high school dropout rate among Hispanics he highlighted a national campaign called "Graduation For All: A Right & Responsibility."

"This campaign is a coordinated awareness effort at all levels," he said. "By involving members of Congress, state, local and school elected officials and advocacy groups, this national campaign will increase awareness for the education barriers facing our children.

"The time is right for a national movement that demands improvements in high school graduation rates."
