UNITED NATIONS, June 8 (UPI) -- The U.N. Security Council has unanimously adopted a resolution granting Iraq full sovereignty June 30 with roles for foreign forces and the United Nations.
Tuesday's unanimous vote contrasted with the panel's division when the U.S.-led coalition invaded Iraq to topple Saddam Hussein's regime last year.
The seven-page measure co-sponsored by Britain, Romania and the United States assures Baghdad can ask to end the mandate. It also calls for conferences between the interim government and the military on offensive operations.
"I hope that adoption of this resolution will send a positive political message to all Iraqis that they should get united," Ambassador Wang Guangya of China said before the vote.
Immediately after the 15 ambassadors endorsed the measure negotiated over two weeks, U.S. Ambassador John Negroponte said, "With today's vote we acknowledge an important milestone. By June 30 Iraq will reassert its sovereignty, a step forward on the path to a democratically elected government."
He said the unanimous vote was "a vivid demonstration of broad international support" for "a federal, democratic, pluralist and unified Iraq in which there is full respect for political and human rights."
