ALEXANDRIA, Va., June 8 (UPI) -- An incumbent Democratic Congressman from Virginia faced a stiff primary challenge Tuesday that turned on accusations he made an anti-Semitic remark.
A long-time ally of Rep. James P. Moran, first elected to represent part of northern Virginia in 1990, accused Moran of making an anti-Semitic remark during a meeting three months ago, the New York Times reported.
Moran denied it, but his Democratic opponent has worked the controversy for all its electoral worth.
"This (election) is about leadership and damaged goods and who can effectively lead this community," said a spokesman for Andrew M. Rosenberg, an associate of Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass.
Among those at the meeting is Moran strategist Joe Trippi, former campaign manager for Howard Dean, who has endorsed Moran.
"It's probably cost me (the) backing of 20 to 30 percent, conceivably," said Moran. "Maybe it's time to think about a defamation-of-character suit. The problem is, if I win the election, I don't have a strong enough case. If I lose, what difference does it make?"
