Malaysia, Singapore cooperate at sea

By United Press International

SINGAPORE, June 8 (UPI) -- Malaysia has pledged to strengthen cooperation with Singapore to safeguard the Straits of Malacca from pirates and terror attacks.

On the cards are coordinated naval patrols by the Royal Malaysian Navy and Republic of Singapore Navy, better information sharing and the setting up of a reporting center to look into incidents at sea, the Straits Times reported.

In addition, both neighbors will work toward greater coordination between their coast guard forces.

Singapore Defense Minister Teo Chee Hean said that cooperation in three areas -- patrolling, exchanging information and improving communications between operations centers -- should boost maritime security.
