Jordan's king to join G8 summit

AMMAN, Jordan, June 5 (UPI) -- Jordan said Saturday King Abdullah will take part in the G-8 summit in the United States this month to relay the "Arab point of view."

Jordanian officials said the king would give the Arab position at the G-8 summit, which opens June 8 in Georgia, regarding reforms in the Middle East, an issue to be discussed at the meeting of the industrial nations.

They said Abdullah would outline Jordan's plan for political, economic and social reform, which the kingdom said it had already launched as an "example" of such change in the region.

They added the monarch would insist reforms could not work if a "just solution for the Palestinian issue" was not reached, since such a solution would speed up the reform process, and "without it, it would make change very difficult."

The United States is expected to seek the support of the G8 for its "greater Middle East" initiative that calls for reforms in the region.

Jordan, Algeria, Bahrain and Yemen were the only Arab countries invited to take part in the summit, in addition to the Muslim countries of Afghanistan and Turkey.
