The Denver Post reported Heemeyer had terrified residents of the city when he began systematically attacking buildings, before the bulldozer became mired in the town's department store.

SWAT teams recovered the body early Saturday after using explosives to gain entry into the bulldozer.

"The machine had a half-inch steel plate with a layer of concrete, and another steel plate," Duane Dailey, chairman of the Grand County commissioners,, told the Post. "On the front of the machine, there were two rifles mounted where he could shoot straight ahead."

Witnesses in the town, located about one hour from Denver, said Heemeyer apparently targeted property owned by people involved in a zoning dispute with him.

The owner of a failed muffler shop, Heemeyer used his bulldozer to demolish or damage a concrete batch plant, the town hall, a bank, a library, the former mayor's house and the local newspaper office.

Police had exchanged gunfire with Heemeyer, but law enforcement officials said the bulldozer was too well fortified for the bullets to reach Heemeyer.
