GOLDEN, Colo., June 4 (UPI) -- The Coors brewery issued a statement disagreeing with a gay-marriage position taken by U.S. Senate hopeful Pete Coors, whose family founded the beer company.

Pete Coors, seeking the Republican Party's nomination to fill the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Ben Nighthorse Campbell, R-Colo., has said he supports a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriages. His opponent in the Aug. 10 primary also supports such an amendment.

The brewery, however, has a different view and company Chief Executive Officer Leo Kiely issued a statement saying, "We do not support discrimination against the gay-lesbian-bisexual-transgender community, via legislation or otherwise."

As a company, Adolph Coors Co., has won accolades from many pro-gay rights groups for its positions.

Former Rep. Bob Schaffer, who is running against candidate Coors for the Republican nomination, said the candidate should be held accountable for the company's policies
