KINSHASA, Democratic Republic of Congo, June 3 (UPI) -- United Nations troops opened fire Thursday on an angry mob in the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, killing at least two people.
Thousands of people stormed the U.N. base in Kinshasa to protest the failure of international peacekeepers to prevent the capture of the eastern town of Bukavu by a rebel leader, the BBC reported.
Rebel leader Brig. Gen. Laurent Nkunda told the BBC his group planned to leave Bukavu late Thursday, but would remain deployed "around" the town.
Nkundu said the rebel actions were in response to government forces attacking members of the dissident community, who have ties to Rwandan Tutsis.
Meanwhile, President Joseph Kabila said the Congolese army would retake Bukavu and charged that the rebels were taking orders from neighboring Rwanda.
Anti-U.N. protests were also reported in Bukavu, Kisangani and Kindu.
