UNITED NATIONS, June 2 (UPI) -- Special Iraq adviser Lakhdar Brahimi Wednesday headed for U.N. World Headquarters in New York where the Security Council discussed a new Iraq draft resolution.
"Our mission has been accomplished," Brahimi told reporters in Baghdad, noting both the (U.S.-led Coalition Provisional Authority) and the Iraqi Governing Council had requested U.N. support for the political transition.
The chief U.N. spokesman in New York said after a country-wide process of nomination, Iraq's autonomous and non-partisan Independent Electoral Commission had been established with U.N. help.
Brahimi was expected to return to New York during the weekend as U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan and the Security Council hold one of their irregular countryside retreats. The spokesman did not know if Brahimi would join them, but said the envoy was expected to brief the secretary-general as well as the Security Council on the situation with the new government in Iraq.
The 15-member panel is debating a new draft resolution on Iraq, introduced by Britain and the United States Tuesday, which, at least initially, appeared to receive positive reactions.
Thursday council members are expected to meet with Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshiyar Zebari.
