IRVING, Texas, June 2 (UPI) -- North Texas authorities have arrested a mother on suspicion of capital murder after her infant daughter died from inhaling chili powder.
Police in Irving say Angela DiSabella, 19, fed the powder to her 5-month-old daughter, Kira, who died Monday afternoon after her mother called 911, the Star-Telegram reported Wednesday.
An autopsy released Tuesday by the Dallas County Medical Examiner's office confirmed Kira died of inhaling chili powder and from malnutrition.
Child Protective Services had been looking for DiSabella since late March when someone reported to authorities Kira was failing to gain weight.
However, CPS could only locate Kira's father.
Chile peppers, from which the powder is made, contain capsaicin, which makes peppers hot and is used in pepper spray, said Joel Gregory, publisher of Fort Worth-based Chile Pepper magazine.
Capsaicin inflames membranes, such as those in the eyes, nose and mouth, Gregory said.
