Florida man dies after stun gun incident

ORLANDO, Fla., June 2 (UPI) -- A Lake Mary, Fla., man has died after being shot with a Taser stun gun -- the fifth such fatality in central Florida since 2002.

Anthony Carl Oliver, 42, had a fever of about 108 degrees at Florida Hospital Orlando after he was shot Monday, police Lt. Curley Bowman said.

He died Tuesday afternoon, the Orlando Sentinel reported Wednesday, noting police records indicate Oliver had cocaine and marijuana in his system.

Three of the other deaths occurred in or near Orlando and one was in Volusia County. Autopsies all blamed drugs and pre-existing medical conditions.

Steve Tuttle, spokesman for Taser International, said Oliver was the 50th person nationwide to die after being shot with a Taser by law enforcement officers.

Taser International has supplied 743 Tasers to the Orlando Police Department.

The gun shoots two barbed probes that shock the targeted subjects with 50,000 volts of electricity.
