Dr. fined for ordering drugs over Internet

HONOLULU, June 2 (UPI) -- A doctor in Hawaii was fined $20,000 and given five years probation for ordering bodybuilding drugs from Canada over the Internet.

Dr. Peter Fong pleaded guilty last July to importing controlled substances into Hawaii and a weapons charge. His attorney said Fong, an anesthesiologist at Kaiser Permanente's Moanalua Medical Center, used the drugs to help him in competitive bodybuilding, the Honolulu Advertiser reported.

Authorities said Fong imported chemical solvents that can be mixed to form gamma hydroxibutyric acid, known as GHB.

The physician was fined $20,000, sentenced to five years on probation and also is not to leave his home for six months, except when working or on family matters, U.S. District Judge Helen Gillmor ruled. The government confiscated a Lexus vehicle and five firearms from Fong. He could have been sentenced to 30 years in prison and fined more than $1 million.

His attorney said Fong had completed a substance-abuse program and will retain his medical license. Fong told his lawyer he plans to resume work as a physician when federal authorities reinstate his license to work with controlled substances.
