Twin sisters drown in suicide pact

COWBRIDGE, Wales, May 31 (UPI) -- Police in the Wales say 73-year-old identical twin sisters walked together into the sea in a suicide drowning pact, The Times of London reported Monday.

Margaret Edwards and Anne Gardner waded out together into the cold water near Cowbridge, each of them carrying a suicide note in her pocket, police said.

Investigators believe the sisters, who always dressed identically, had run out of money after the death of Edwards' husband last year.

Gardner's husband died 40 years ago, and she then moved in with her sister and brother-in-law in their $1.3 million home.

Neither woman had any children and their next of kin is thought to be Edwards' son by his first wife.

"It is a very sad situation," a South Wales Police spokesman said. "We are not treating the deaths as suspicious and it appears to be a double suicide. It is a terrible tragedy and we will be compiling a full report for the coroner."

Inquests will take place later this week.
