WASHINGTON, May 31 (UPI) -- Former Republican Sen. Bob Dole of Kansas says U.S. President George Bush's political career hinges on the war in Iraq, the Washington Times said Monday.
Dole, who unsuccessfully ran for the presidency in 1996, said from a political perspective, it was "unfortunate that we've got a war going on in a presidential-election year."
He also told NBC's "Meet the Press" he would have made the same decision as Bush to stick with the job until it was done.
"I don't think he (Bush) is going to backpedal or change positions because it might cost him some votes," Dole said. "I think he's made the decision. He's going to stick with it, and that's the choice he should -- that's the choice I would make."
On the eve of Memorial day in another interview on "Fox News Sunday," Dole said the situation in Iraq is "not like World War II."
"You can find some similarities," he said. "But the country is not united."
