French architect probed over China work

BEIJING, May 31 (UPI) -- The architect of the collapsed Paris airport is under investigation for fraud in connection with his work on the National Theater in Beijing.

Paul Andreu, architect of the Charles de Gaulle airport where a terminal partly collapsed on May 23, is involved in a judicial probe concerning his work in China, Xinhua reported Sunday, citing the French Daily Le Monde.

The investigation centers on a possible misappropriation of funds from the Paris airport authority, which served as Andreu's legal representative in China and signed a construction contract with the Chinese Government, the article said.

Andreu designed the Oriental Art Center in Shanghai as well as the National Theater currently under construction in Beijing. The theater project was halted for 18 months while officials debated the suitability of the design in the context of China's culture and environment.

Andreu, 65, has designed more than 50 airports worldwide.
