Gravel pit a dead end for Oregon searchers

CORVALLIS, Ore., May 28 (UPI) -- What was believed to be a shallow grave in an Oregon gravel pit turned out to be a dead end in the search for a missing college student.

KOIN-TV, Portland, said Friday that a check what looked like a fresh grave east of Corvallis turned up no sign of Brooke Wilberger, a 19-year-old student who disappeared Monday from an apartment complex near the Oregon State University campus.

At first glance, Friday's discovery at the pit appeared to be a breakthrough in the baffling disappearance; however Corvallis police were forced to go back to checking out lists of sex offenders and other potential suspects in and around the college town.

Wilberger, a student at Brigham Young University, had been staying with her sister at the apartment complex that is just a few blocks from the OSU campus.

Signs of a struggle were reportedly found in the area of the complex where Wilberger was last seen.
