Afghan, U.S. kill at least 20 Taliban

GHBRAGYAN, Afghanistan, May 26 (UPI) -- Afghan and U.S. fighters killed about 20 Taliban militants near Afghanistan's border with Pakistan, the BBC reported Wednesday.

Afghan officials said national forces, aided by U.S. ground troops, engaged Taliban militants in Ghbragyan, near Spin Boldak, Tuesday afternoon.

Three Afghani soldiers were wounded in the three-hour gunfight, after which U.S. warplanes fired on the Taliban with precision ordnance.

U.S. soldiers reported seeing the bodies of about 20 Taliban, an Afghan official said.

If confirmed, the Taliban losses would be their worst since the United States stepped up military operations earlier this year.

The United States has 20,000 troops in the country and has vowed to crush militants seeking to overthrow Afghanistan's government.

Pakistan has recently stepped up its campaign to root out foreign militants on its side of the border.
