U.S. defense employee killed in Liberia

WASHINGTON, May 25 (UPI) -- An American killed in Liberia Monday was an employee of the U.S. Defense Department, officials revealed Tuesday.

The body of the unidentified U.S. citizen was found in a hotel room in the Liberian capital of Monrovia. U.S. Embassy representatives in Monrovia and State Department officials in Washington refused to disclose his name.

State Department spokesman Richard Boucher, however, identified him as "a U.S. Department of Defense civilian employee." He said the individual was an employee of the U.S. European Command and was in Monrovia as part of an assessment team reviewing the security situation in that nation.

A U.S. negotiated peace accord asks for U.S. support in rebuilding security arrangements in the African state.

"An investigation into the cause of death is underway," Boucher said.
