Investigation called for weeping icons

BRISBANE, Australia, May 25 (UPI) -- The Catholic Church plans an investigation into claims that religious icons are bleeding and weeping rose oil in a small Australian church.

The phenomena have been reported in the Vietnamese Community Hall in Brisbane. Archbishop John Bathersby said he had appointed Judicial Vicar Dr. Adrian Farrelly to investigate and determine the cause of the apparent marvels, The Australian reported Tuesday.

The archbishop said he could not predict how long the investigation would take, but said a similar inquiry in Western Australia last year had taken two months. In that incident, investigators judged the phenomena did not meet the criteria of a miracle.

The community church continues to attract thousands of believers who want to see for themselves what appear to be miraculous occurrences. Some say they believe such phenomena are a sign of hope from God in an uncertain world.
