Saudi paper: U.S. tricked into Iraq

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, May 24 (UPI) -- A pro-government Saudi daily said Monday former Iraqi opposition leader Ahmed Chalabi tricked the United States into Iraq.

In a front-page editorial the daily Okaz, which largely reflects the position of the Saudi government, said: "The superpower led by scientific and strategic brains is in disarray and committing big mistakes in Iraq."

It said the United States could easily capture Iraq, but growing resistance is hampering U.S. efforts.

"Even a great power like the United States fell to the ruse and lies of an Iraqi opposition figure named Ahmed Chalabi who misled the U.S. administration with his wrong information to make it fall in the traps of the Iraqis," the paper said.

Chalabi, a Shiite who heads the Iraqi National Congress, was accused by Washington of providing misinformation to the Pentagon on the situation in Iraq.
