Canadian campaign centers on taxes

OTTAWA, May 24 (UPI) -- Canada's electoral campaign between incumbent Liberals and the opposition is emerging as a choice between entitled bureaucrats and heartless conservatives.

On the one hand are warnings from Prime Minister Paul Martin that Stephen Harper, his conservative opponent, would cut healthcare and social programs to a level found in the United States, the Globe and Mail reported Monday.

On the other hand are warnings from Harper that Liberals have badly over-taxed Canadians.

On June 28 voters will decide whether to give Liberals their fourth consecutive government in what is shaping up to be an unusually close contest.

In ads appearing in newspapers across the country this weekend, the Liberals said Harper's "No. 1 priority is tax cuts" and the Conservative objective of tax rates below those in the United States would mean "cutting vital programs and services, at a time when we need to reinvest in health."

The Liberal attempt to depict Harper as pro-United States and a danger to social programs is the same plan the party used successfully against Stockwell Day four years ago.
